Especially after now that it has been decided to abolish all grants for religious or ecclesiastical purposes. Seeing that even when such grants were still in existence and being liberally made, and the Government contributed less than two-thirds of the cost of constructing the cathedral, to the best of my understanding, the Government contributed (as appears from the print now forwarded) a smaller proportion than it does now.

Although, however, the present request must be declined, I think it reasonable that the fabric of the cathedral should be placed in sound repair before the trustees are relieved from the duty of maintaining it without any state aid.
